Los Angeles Dodgers Background and History:
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a rich and versatile history. Established in 1883, the Dodgers are only 37 years older than the sport of baseball itself! For the first seventy years as a team, the Dodgers resided in Brooklyn . In the 1950's real estate mogul Walter O' Malley owned the majority of the Dodgers. Due to a crumbling stadium, the Dodgers had been unable to sell out a game for years, in spite of their success as a reigning baseball team. Unable to purchase land for a new Dodgers stadium in Brooklyn , it was then Walter began looking elsewhere. Finally, in 1958, Walter O' Malley made the Dodgers bid their final farewell to Brooklyn and say hello to Los Angeles .
The move seemed a good one for the Dodgers, who in their first year as the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series title and whose very first game in Los Angeles ever resulted in a then-record attendance of over 78,000. The Los Angeles Dodgers have made history repeatedly, including bearing the proud title of having the first African American in baseball; Jackie Robinson. The Dodgers also hold the record for the largest attendance of a baseball game in the history of the world when they celebrated their 50 th anniversary of playing in Los Angeles in 2008. The crowd was 115,300. Much of the crowd however, was there specifically to see Manny Ramirez, one of the best hitters in the league, at bat.
DODGERS TODAY: News on Manny Ramirez
Now as the Dodgers head in to their 2009 season, the biggest news of Manny Ramirez is that he will see $25 million in his bank account to once again play with the Dodgers. After four months of negotiating, Manny finally signed the new contract Wednesday, March 4, 2009. His new salary makes Manny Ramirez the second highest paid player in MLB history, coming in behind only to A-Rod's $32 million.
In addition to Manny's new $25 million, there are many other financial perks. He has the option of signing next year for an additional $20 million, and if he chooses to decline the Dodgers offer, he will still receive $5 million per year for the next three years to follow, with $10 million in 2010, and another $8.33 million for the three years to follow after that.
Other baseball teams don't seem to be disappointed however, as few would look at $45 million in earnings for two years of play-time as economically savvy, no matter how good the player. Manny is undoubtedly one of the best hitters in the team, and now that he will be standing in line beside his fellow Dodgers on opening day, the speculation can be put to rest.
When faced with the question of why he decided to sign and what took so long, Manny's reply was that he liked his Dodger's teammates, and that the Los Angeles Dodgers fans were better to him than any other fans in his career. Now LA Dodgers fans can quit worry about what would happen to the thousands of Manny wigs sitting in storage!
