More than 8 million cubic yards of earth had to be moved to build the stadium, and approximately twenty-one thousand precast concrete units, weighing up to 32 tons each, were trucked in to form the stadium's structural framework. The tiers were cantilevered, supported by bracketing rather than poles or beams that could impede a spectator's view of the playing field. It was designed to seat fifty-six thousand people, and the paved terraces of land around it would be able to accommodate sixteen thousand parked automobiles. And in time, the once barren landscape of Chavez Ravine became a veritable arboretum as towering palm trees and a rich mixture of other tropical shrubbery sprang up around Dodger Stadium. Two records were set in Dodger Stadium in May 1962. The Dodgers took part in the longest game that had been played in Los Angeles, a 16inning, five-hour-and-eight-n7inute contest against the Cubs that lasted all the way to 1:08 in the morning. |

The few who stayed to watch the ending saw the Dodgers win, 6-5. And on May 19, Stan Musial lined a Ron Perranoski pitch into the outfield for his 3,431" hit, a new National League record. The previous high of 3,430 hits, by Hones Wagner, had been in the record books since 1917. Later in the month Koufax was at i1 again. This time lie struck out 16 Philadelphia Phillies in a game that the Dodgers won 6-3. This turned out to be just one game in a 13-game Dodgers winning streak. But the San Francisco Giants were also white-hot that year, and even after 13 straight wins, the Dodgers still trailed them by one and one-half game. On June 30, Sandy Koufax once again dazzled everyone, especially the New York Mets; they faced him for nine innings and came away both runlets and hitless. The 5-0 victory was his first no-hitter, and it would not be his last. He struck out 13 Mets that day as well, and was credited with his 11", win of the season against 4 losses. |
