Over in the American circuit, Tris Speaker's Cleveland Indians barely got by the scandal scarred Chicago White Sox (their "fixers," including such bona fide stars as Shoeless Joe Jackson, Eddie Cocotte, Happy Flesh, and Lefty Williams, were not expelled from the game until two weeks before the season's end, when a grand jury finally made public its findings). Speaker himself batted .388 that year, and his 50 doubles were the most in either league. Five other Indians hit above .300 as well. Jim Bagboy won 31 games and lost only 12, his win percentage of .721 the best in the majors. The next day, it was Duster Mails' turn for the Indians. The 24-year-old left-hander, who had produced a record of 7-0 in the 1920 season, had been in the bullpen for the 1916 Brooklyn pennant winners. But now he took his former teammates to task, hurling a three-hit shutout that put the Indians up four games to two in the Series. The next (lay it was all over. Coveleski tossed his third five-hitter, this one a 3-0 shutout. The Indians only needed seven games to collect the five wins necessary for the 1920 world championship title.
Only Zack Wheat and Ivy Olson hit well for the Robins in the Series. In seven games, the team could only sneak eight runs across home plate. The composite team batting average was a meager .205. And, as disheartening as it was, it would have to satisfy the Brooklyn fans' postseason hunger for a long time; the club's next trip to a World Series would be more than two decades later.
