At the time, Brooklyn was an independent city of about nine hundred thousand people; its single umbilical connection to the city of New York on the other side of the East River was the Brooklyn Bridge, which had just been completed the year before. It was a time when New York City had a population of less than 1.5 million, when Chester an Arthur was president of the then 38 United States of America, when the automobile, airplane, and radio were still dreams of the future. There were 12 teams in the American Association when Brooklyn joined it in 1884. The newcomer hardly made a mark its maiden year, finishing ninth. Like any other enterprise, Dodgers would take time to develop. The owners were serious about attracting tal­ent to their fledgling team, and the most notable acquisition was manager William McGunnigle in 1888. He took a loser of a team and turned it around, winning Brooklyn its first pennant ever in 1889. By that time, the team had acquired a nickname, the "Bridegrooms," because so many of its players had gotten married during the spring and summer of 1889. It was soon shortened to "Grooms."
