Sal Maglie picked up the first win, aided by a home run by Gil Hodges with two on and a solo blast by Jackie Robinson (his last major league homer, incidentally). The final was 6-3. In the next game the Dodgers were even more volatile. They battered Yankees pitchers for 13 runs in what was the longest nine-inning game in World Series history to that point. The final was 13-8, and the Yankees had used seven pitchers, another Series record.Whitey Ford was slated to face the Dodgers in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium. Ile went the distance, aided by a three-run homer by Enos Slaughter and a solo by Billy Martin, giving the Yankees a 5-3 triumph. Tom Sturdivant did the honors for the Yankees the next day, allowing the Dodgers only two runs and six hits. This time Mickey Mantle and Hank Bauer teamed for a pair of home runs. The 6-2 win brought the Series to a 2-2 tie. Game 5 at Yankee Stadium is legend. That October 8 afternoon, Don Larsen took the mound and retired 27 consecutive Dodgers for the first and only perfect game in World Series history. It totally overshadowed another fine pitching performance that day, Sal Maglie's five-hitter. The 2-0 victory moved the Yankees ahead by a game. Reliever Clem Labine was somewhat of a surprise choice to start the next day. But the selection was a good one because he hurled meticulously through 10 full innings to shut out the Yankees 1-0, the winning run coming when Jackie Robinson singled to drive in junior Gilliam in the bottom of the tenth. |

Again the Series came down to a climactic final game. At Ebbets Field, Don Newcombe took the mound for the Dodgers and Johnny Kucks for the Yankees. But this game was not to be a nail biter; it was more like a migraine headache for Dodgers fans. New York built a 5-0 leads by the seventh inning and then increased it to nine when Moose Showroom clobbered a grand slammer. Kucks allowed the dispirited Dodgers only three hits all day and chalked up the Yankees' second shutout of the Series. It was, of course, the last World Series to be played in Ebbets Field, or Brooklyn for that matter. The team played only one more season in the borough, and they fell to third place that year, never really in contention with Milwaukee, which brought the first World Series to the city that was known for its beer and brats, and after the 1957 Series, its Braves. Jackie Robinson retired by 1957, after an outstanding career that would eventually earn him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The other Boys of Summer were well into their thirties, now more like the "Middle-Aged Men of Summer." Utility infielder Charlie Neal proved to be a fine addition to the team, and Don Drysdale emerged as the pitching staff's ace performer that year (17-9). Batted only .224, but he bequeathed his golden glove and legendary leadership forever to Dodgers lore.
