Don Zimmer would fill in for him between second and third before having that position taken away in early summer by a speedster named Maurice Morning Wills, who had been in the minors since 1951. Steve Bilko, whose big bat had not resounded loudly enough to satisfy Walt Alston in 1958, was sent to the Dodgers' farm team in Spokane, Washington. The Dodgers, as it would turn out, made an especially propitious trade before the season when they picked up Wally Moon from the Cardinals in exchange for Gino Cimoli. Veteran Carl Furillo, a Dodger since 1946, would spend most of his time in the dugout and his right-field haunts would be occupied transiently by Ron Fairly, Norm Larker, and Don Demeter. Roger Craig and Danny McDevitt would move into the regular pitching rotation. A hint of the change to come was played out down in Florida in March.
The Grapefruit League, a perennial proving ground, turned out to be a delightful romp for the Dodgers. From their lowly status of 1958, they suddenly blossomed in the spring of 1959 and ended up on top of the Grapefruit League with a record of 13-10. One of their games, incidentally, was down in Havana against the Cincinnati Reds. Fidel Castro threw out the ball to start the game in the last days of Cuba's friendship with the United States. A few reporters were saying that the rejuvenated Dodgers would not be a team to be taken for granted in 1959. Others-the majority, in fact shrugged off the Dodgers' preseason success and suggested that reality would catch up with them once the regular season was underway.

The race went helter-skelter all the way to the last day of the season. On that day, it was mathematically possible that the National League race could end in a three-way tie. It didn't. The Giants lost two games to the Cardinals and were out of the running. But the season did end in a two-way tie when both the Dodgers and the Braves won and ended their seasons with identical records of £38-68. So the pennant would have to be decided by a three-game playoff series. The Dodgers had hardly showered after that last regular-season game before they were on the team airplane headed cross-country for Milwaukee. There would be no rest period: the first game of the playoffs was scheduled for the next afternoon. Danny McDevitt started for the Dodgers but gave up two runs and was relieved in the second inning by a young right-hander named Larry Sherry, who was about to become the Dodgers' ace fireman. The Dodgers tied it up in the third and then went ahead for good in the sixth when John Roseboro homebred. The final: Dodgers 3, Braves 2. Sherry did not give up a run in a superb seven and-two-thirds-inning relief performance.
