There were also a couple of rookies of note on the bench-20-yearold Duke Snider and a catcher named Gil Hodges, who would be reassigned the next year to first base. Ralph Branca, at 21, had been promoted to the regular rotation to join Joe Hatton, Vic Lombardi, and Harry Taylor. Hugh Casey was the mainstay of the bullpen corps. The Yankees had breezed through the American League to capture their eighth flag in 12 years. They still had DiMaggio, Risotto, Henrich, and Keller, and a rookie catcher of promise with the unusual name of Yogi Berra. There was a relatively new pitching staff, which included Allie Reynolds, Spec Shea, Vic Raschi, fireman Joe Page, and the old vet Spud Chandler, now 40. The Yankees were also under a new pilot, Bucky Harris, who had replaced a discontented Joe McCarthy (lie couldn't get along with Larry MacPhail either). |

By 1951 the Dodgers were used to photo finishes at the end of the regular season. No one, however, was quite prepared for the drama that the 1951 baseball season would hold for the Dodgers. It began, as most baseball pundits predicted, with the Dodgers dominating the National League. By mid-August the Boys of Summer were coasting along with a 13% game lead over the second-place New York Giants. Then the unexpected began. Over at the Polo Grounds, Leo Durocher switched his lineup; he brought Bobby Thomson and Whitey Lockney into the infield, sent Monte Irvin to the outfield, and changed the pitching rotation around. The Giants reeled off a 16-game winning streak as a result and the Dodgers began losing. Suddenly, what seemed like a cakewalk was turning into a pennant race. The Giants continued to win (37 of their last 44 games) while the Dodgers ambled on, playing mediocre baseball. On the last day of the season, the two teams were wedged in a tie for first place.
