Sportswriters rushed to compare the ninth-inning loss to the heartbreaker of 1951 when the Giants' Bobby Thomson hit his historic game-winning home run. But it was not quite that dramatic. Perhaps it was equally disheartening, but this game was not decided on a single pitch; it had really been decided in the last two woeful weeks of the season. After the champagne in the Dodgers locker room was returned to the store unopened and the players and management went home to watch the World Series on television, there was much second-guessing about the Dodgers' late-season swan dive. Many agreed that if Sandy Koufax had remained healthy all season the Dodgers would have breezed directly into the World Series. Indeed, when the World Series began, it seemed unbelievable that the Dodgers were not out there on the playing field. They had ended the season with a record of 102-63 (.618), a far better record than the 88-68 of 1959 when they did win the pennant. In fact, it had been their winnings season since their penoant-takiug 105-49 year of 1953 back in Brooklyn.

Four days later, Koufax was back on the mound, this time against the Phillies, and he won again to launch the Dodgers on what would be their longest winning streak of the season-eight games. When it ended, the Dodgers had risen to second place, below first by only a game. By June 7, they had made it to the top, if only by .002 percentage points. By mid-June, Koufax had already posted his 10"' win of the year against three losses, Tommy Davis was leading the National League in batting with an average of .340, and Maury Wills was hitting .330 and menacing the base paths despite an injured leg. Both the Cardinals and [lie Giants put heat on the Dodgers in the National League in 1963. The Cardinals had fine pitching from Bob Gibson and Ernie Broglio, and from an older but still stalwart Curt Simmons. And they had consistent hitting from Dick Groat, Bill White, Ken Boyer, and Curt Flood. And 42-year-old Stan MusiaL, in his last season, was there to be called on in clutch situations. The Giants were a team of sluggers with Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, and Felipe Alou. They also had pitcher Juan Marichal, having his best year yet for the Giants. BV the All-Star break it was head-to-head-to head, the makings of a sensational pennant race. Incidentally, there was only one All-Star Game that year, ending the four-year practice of having two games. Only two Dodgers saw action in that game.
