It was back on the plane for another two thousand-mile flight to L.A. In Game 2 the following afternoon, Don Drysdale (17-13) would pitch for the Dodgers, facing the Braves' Lew Burdette (21-15). The Chicagoans in 1959 were known, however, as the "Go-Go Sox" because they ran and hustled with such gusto as to inspire the fans at Comiskey Park to a chant of "Go, go, go . . ." almost every time one of them got on base. Sox shortstop Luis Aparicio led the majors in stolen bases that year with 56, and Jim Landis was third in the American League with 20. The team total of stolen bases (113), highest in the majors, was 29 more than the second-best total by the Dodgers (84). Nellie Fox, at 31, was still as dependable as ever at bat and was the game's finest fielder at second base. They had some power from veteran catcher Sherm Lollar and from mighty Ted Kluszewski, whom they had acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates late in the season. Early Wynn, less than a year away from his 40''' birthday, won 22 games for the Sox and posted an ERA of 3.16. Bob Shaw won another 18 games and Billy Pierce 14, and relievers Turk Lown and Gerrv Staley saved 15 and 14 games, respectively. Gargantuan Frank Howard, whose two-year baseball career had so far been a roller-coaster ride between the majors and minors, was brought back up, this time to stay. Another rookie, Tommy Davis, landed the left-field job after spending four years in the Dodgers farm system. Later in the year, Willie Davis (Unrelated) would come from Spokane, Washington, to secure the center-field position.

After that, however, the season was anything but thrilling. The Dodgers were never really in contention, and the season turned into one of prolonged disappointment. When it was over, the Pittsburgh Pirates, behind the hitting of Dick Groat and Roberto Clernente and the pitching of Vern Law and Bob Friend, had virtually sailed through the National League. The Milwaukee Braves and St. Louis Cardinals trailed them by seven and nine games, respectively. And in fourth place were last year's flag holders, the Dodgers, with a record of 82-72, a full 13 games behind the Pirates. The fans had not despaired, however. A new Dodgers home attendance record was posted: 2,253,887 people passed through the Coliseum turnstiles in 1960. There had been a few sparkles in Walt Alston's otherwise murky skies. Maury Wills had not merely been playing at shortstop with a blessed glove; he had become a dazzling base thief. His 50 stolen bases in (lie 1960 season had been the most in the National League and only 1 behind the preeminent speedster of the Go-Go White Sox, Luis Aparicio. Wills had also collected the most Dodgers hits (152), but the club batting crown had gone to Norm Larker-converted that year to a full-time first baseman-whose .323 had been only two percentage points behind league-leader Dick Groat of the Pirates. At the time it was the highest batting average ever recorded by a Dodger in Los Angeles.
