The Dodgers started out well but were overshadowed as the Giants established a two-game lead by May 15. The Dodgers, however, had won 18 and lost 13 and were playing very good baseball, as were the Cincinnati Reds. By June 1, the Reds and Giants shared first place, with the Dodgers a game behind. During that period, Duke Snider clouted his 370", major league home run. Unfortunately, two innings later his elbow was broken by an errant pitch from Cardinal Ace Bob Gibson. It was estimated he would be out for at least five weeks. After June 15, however, the Reds seemed indomitable. Behind the red-hot bats of Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson and the consistently superb pitching of Joey jay, Jim O'Toole, Bob Purkev, and Jim Brosnan, they won 21 of 28 games and by mid-July had taken a commanding five game lead in the National League pennant race. The Dodgers hung in there, however, and by August 15 were back in first with a record of 69-42, a one-game advantage over the Reds. Then, in a torrent, came a 10-game losing streak, a disastrous double-header double shutout by the Reds at the Coliseum (6-0, 8-0), and a September three-game sweep by the Giants to snuff out any lingering Dodgers hope.

It was a magnificent sight of monumental proportions, in pure white and Dodger Blue, symmetrically sculpted in tiers, encircled by vast concrete aprons, and fed by myriad roads and access ways. Sportswriters quickly dubbed it "Tai O’Malley.” A half-decade earlier, Chavez Ravine was nothing more than a dusty, parched set of hills interlaced with gulches, arroyos, and poorly paved roads, and littered with a few squatters' shacks; it was a wasteland where scraggly goats once grazed, and where raccoons and opossums rooted among the garbage dumped there. The plot of ground appeared more like what the dust-bowl Okies tried to escape rather than a municipal region a mere 10-minute drive from downtown Los Angeles. But the goats were shooed away, and the other foragers fled when the bulldozers came. Captain Emil Praeger, a New York architect, had drawn up the elaborate plans, and after $18 million and a few years, Dodger Stadium was ready for the opening of the 1962 baseball season. It was the first stadium to be built with private funds since Yankee Stadium had been erected in the Bronx back in 1923 to house the huge crowds who wanted to watch Babe Ruth play.
